  ANCIENT CITY OF TROY
The ancient city of Troy which has been the main theme of the epic poem Iliada and Odyssey by Homeros, one of the most famous poets of the antique world, and which is known as the place where the Great Troy battle took place stands within the boundaries of Çanakkale. It has been identified that this city was founded in the year 3000 BC and existed until 400 AD. The first excavations in Troy were carried out by a German, H. Schlieman in the year 1870. The remains of a city comprising 9 layers was unearthed in the 9th phase of Troy. The excavations started again after 1890 and continued until 1938. A great part of the treasures which were found during the excavations which were unorganized and consequently destructive carried out to find out whether the Trojan Battle was real or not, were smuggled abroad. The subsequent excavations were carried out by Dörpfeld, Blegen and Manfred Korfmann respectively. The excavations carried out by Korfmann are still continueing. Troy comprises 9 building layers. Today in the antique city there stand a museum building and the huge model of the wooden horse which is the symbol of the Trojan Battle. In the museum pots and pans , small pieces of sculptures, glass items and architectural findings found during the Trojan excavations are displayed. Hans Schliemann who digged a trench, 40 meters wide and 17 meters deep in the middle of the Hisarlęk tumulus in order to find the treasures of the Trojan King Priamos went down to the the main rock but destroyed many layers during this work. In the year 1882 they colaborated with Dörpfeld and his team and have discovered important findings. Dörpfeld has unearthed 9 phases of civilization and the archaeologists following him have seperated the 9 phases of Dörpfeld into more then 30 settlement layers. Thus one of the most important centers which was considered as a legend prior to H. Schlieman was revealed , a legend woven with various historical events became reality and introduced to the world of science as one of the oldest civilizations of the world. Troy has been declared as “Historical National Park” in 1998 and has been included in Unesco’s list of World’s Heritage List.
